MVL First Friday - September: Going too Far
First Friday Going Too Far Friday, September 2nd Back by popular demand, join us for an encore evening of real people telling real-life stories, raw and without notes. We invited an eclectic line up of guests to tell ten-minute true stories based on the theme, "Going too far: stories of not knowing when to say when". Storytellers include, among others: Author and Journalist, Jack Boulware – Jack is the executive director and co-founder of San Francisco’s premier literary festival, Litquake. His books include Gimme Something Better, an oral history of the Bay Area punk scene and Sex, American Style. Jack has also written for the New York Times Magazine, the Washington Post, Playboy and Mojo. Journalist, Storyteller, and Teacher, Nathaniel Eaton - Nathaniel is a Moth main stager and senior editor of En Fuego Magazine. He is also a contributing columnist for SF Weekly, and a travel writer for the New York Post. His play, Dream at the End of the World, is published worldwide by Samuel French. Currently he is teaching storytelling with Dave Eggers at 826 Valencia and working on his first book, Packing for the Apocalypse. Comedian and Storyteller, Joe Klocek – Joe is the co-founder of the popular storytelling series “Previously Secret Information” and was recently named “Best Comedian” 2011 by SF Weekly. He has appeared on NBC's, "Last Comic Standing" and was the commentator for the Emmy award-winning documentary, "A Bridge so Far". Joe has performed at every major comedy club in the country including Alaska. Writer and Editor, Samantha Schoech - Samantha writes four columns a week for Baby Center (where she often gets ravaged in comments). Her anthology, The Bigger the Better, the Tighter the Sweater: 21 Funny Women on Beauty, Body Image and Other Hazards of Being Female, was a San Francisco Chronicle bestseller. Samantha once starred in a TV commercial for the San Francisco Giants and she can often be heard as the voice of characters like “Stevie the Stoolie” in Mark Fiore’s political animations. Writer, Teacher, Blogger—Pamela Alma Weymouth - Pamela is the winner of June's story slam at the Mill Valley Library. She has won awards for her fiction and essays from Glimmer Train and Traveler’s Tales. Her writing can be found in several anthologies including Best Women’s Travel Writing 2009. She writes a humor blog for The Huffington Post and she covers sustainable parenting issues for Inhabitots.com. She earned her MFA in creative writing at University of San Francisco. She has just moved to Mill Valley with her four-year-old twins and the library is the cultural beacon that keeps her grounded when she begins to wonder what she’s doing here in the woods. To add to the excitement, the evening will include an open mic storytelling session. Here's your chance to flex your oratory chops. Names will be drawn from a hat and five entrants will get to speak for five minutes each on the theme "going too far." The only rules: stories must be true and told without using notes.
